What is a facet joint?

Facet joints are synovial joints in the posterior vertebrae that connect to the vertebrae together providing stability and support. Facet joint injuries make up a large proportion of lower back and neck injuries, both chronic and acute.

How is a facet joint injured?

  • Degenerative change (chronic) – Like all joints in the body, facets joints are subject to degenerative change through wear and tear. This is often seen in people who work physically demanding jobs.
  • Acute trauma – Caused by strain on the joint usually involving flexion or extension coupled with rotation.

Symptoms of facet joint injuries:

  • Pain – Usually worse with bending backward
  • Restricted movement – Especially spinal extension
  • Referred pain

Treatment:

  • Initial treatment – Gentle movement and either heat or ice (whichever feels better).
  • Manual therapy – Reducing tissue tension and mobilising spinal joints can help promote lymphatic drainage and reduced joint inflammation.
  • Stretching/exercises – Stretches and mobilising exercises can help to improve range of motion and lymphatic drainage.
  • Medication – Analgesics can help to manage the pain associated with facet joint injuries and anti-inflammatories can help to reduce the inflammation that occurs in the facet joint. Make sure to follow the dosage instructions.
