What is Bursitis?
Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae. Bursa are small fluid filled sacs around the body designed to cushion the joint and help reduce friction between the bones, tendons and muscles. The most common locations people experience bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. Cases of bursitis can last up to months depending on severity and presence of risk factors.
Common symptoms:
- Pain – Aching and tenderness, localised to the site of bursitis.
- Swelling – Depending on the severity, swelling may be observable.
- Stiffness – Joint stiffness can occur due to swelling around the joint.
- Pressure – Due to swelling a pressure may be felt at the site of bursitis.
Common causes:
- Repetitive strain and overuse injury – Occupations and/or hobbies involving repeated
- Underlying inflammatory conditions – Such as arthritis, infection and diabetes.
- Direct trauma – Injuries that involve direct trauma to a bursa can lead to bursitis.
Risk factors:
- Occupational strains
- Increased age
- Obesity
- Underlying conditions
Treatment
- Initial treatment: Involves rest and ice.
- Manual therapy: Reduce tissue tension and improve circulation around the body. Improving pressure on the bursa and promoting lymphatic drainage of inflammation.
- Stretching and exercise: Reduce tissue tension and strengthen the muscles improving pressure on the bursa
- Medication: Analgesics and anti-inflammatories. Reducing pain and inflammation at the injury site.
- Cortisone injection: Improve inflammation and reduce pain from bursa.
- Surgery: In very rare cases a surgeon will remove an inflamed bursa (bursectomy) in cases that all other treatment options have proven ineffective.
